The title is a phrase used by author Virginia Woolf in one of her autobiographical essays titled Reminiscences, as she describes the state of her family after the loss of her mother.
The first movement is an exploration of a tetrachord that develops as harmonic and melodic materials in different contrapuntal layers, searching and yearning for an answer.
The second movement however is a kind of release; an acceptance; a return to fundamental intervallic relationships that exist in the spectrum of sound.
